The Story of Red Coral

Red coral is not mined from the earth but grows in the sea, formed over many years from the calcium-rich skeletons of marine coral, which gives it a warm, opaque red quite unlike any faceted gemstone. Softer than the mineral gemstones at around 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale, fine coral is valued for an even, saturated colour, with the deep reds of Italy long held as the finest and Japan valued alongside it.
