The Story of Pearl

Unlike the mineral gemstones of the Navratna, the pearl is born in water, formed slowly within a living mollusc as fine layers of nacre build around a single nucleus over time. This organic origin gives it a gentle, glowing lustre rather than the fire of a faceted gemstone, and its softness, between 2.5 and 4.5 on the Mohs scale, asks for a little more care in wear.
